Ecological risk assessments are only as good as the data employed in their conduct.  Data review determines if a study is consistent with accepted or standardized test methods, employs good laboratory practices, and an in depth analysis considers what conclusions can be supported.

Available scientifically sound data and other relevant information can be used with computational methods (models) to extrapolate across taxonomic groups (e.g., species sensitivity distributions) or in adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) to facilitate comprehensive risk assessments.

Ecological risk assessments evaluate the likelihood that exposure to one or more stressors may cause harmful ecological effects. Assessments can be simple deterministic hazard evaluations to more refined probabilistic assessments depending on the nature of available information.  The probability of occurrence and magnitude of potential adverse effect are characterized in a refined assessment.

Current scientific methods and a high degree of scientific judgement are used in the characterization of ecological risks. Risk mitigation measures can also be suggested consistent with regulatory requirements and policy considerations.
